देश में बढ़ता PM प्रदूषण अब गंभीर पर्यावरणीय संकट बनता जा रहा है। हाल ही में प्रकाशित एक वैज्ञानिक स्टडी में खुलासा हुआ है कि गंगा के मैदानी इलाकों में पिछले एक दशक में PM प्रदूषण करीब 20 फीसदी तक बढ़ गया है। इसका असर अब हिमालयी क्षेत्रों तक भी पहुंच चुका है। कोलकाता के Bose Institute द्वारा की गई इस रिसर्च में बताया गया कि बिहार और पश्चिम बंगाल सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित राज्यों में शामिल हैं। स्टडी के अनुसार पंजाब, हरियाणा और दिल्ली से निकलने वाला प्रदूषण पश्चिमी हिमालय तक पहुंच रहा है। वहीं बिहार और पश्चिम बंगाल का PM प्रदूषण पूर्वी हिमालय की हवा को खराब कर रहा है।
वैज्ञानिकों ने कहा कि बायोमास जलाने, थर्मल पावर प्लांट और शहरी कचरा जलाने से हालात और बिगड़ रहे हैं। रिपोर्ट में यह भी सामने आया कि राष्ट्रीय स्वच्छ वायु कार्यक्रम से कुछ सुधार जरूर हुआ है, लेकिन कार्बनयुक्त एरोसोल अब भी चिंता का विषय बने हुए हैं। विशेषज्ञों का मानना है कि अगर जल्द ठोस कदम नहीं उठाए गए तो हिमालयी पर्यावरण पर इसका बड़ा असर पड़ सकता है।
